IBC training requirements
The Role of the IBC & Documenting Training
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), as mandated by the NIH Guidelines, is responsible for assessing the training and expertise of personnel involved in synthetic or recombinant nucleic acid (s/rNA) molecule research. Additionally, the IBC extends this responsibility to include personnel engaged in research or teaching activities involving other potentially hazardous biological agents.
Ensuring that faculty/staff and students can effectively control hazards and mitigate risks requires appropriate training. The IBC expects all Principal Investigators (PI) and research personnel to complete lab-specific training tailored to their activities. Documentation of this training is typically requested during IBC laboratory visits or when submitting applications. It is the PIs responsibility to provide or arrange this training for all laboratory personnel.
In addition to lab-specific training, the IBC mandates general training in specific areas, depending on the research or teaching activities of the laboratory. These general trainings must be completed through the online courses offered via the . Trainings from other sources will not be accepted as substitutes.
All Principal Investigators are required to complete all relevant trainings, regardless of whether they are actively working at the bench. Furthermore, all laboratory personnel listed on an IBC Protocol must provide documentation of completed training and maintain compliance with training requirements throughout the project.
Accountability
Principal Investigator (PI)
The Principal Investigator is responsible for:
- Training and Safety Oversight:
- Ensuring all project personnel receive proper instruction in the safe handling of materials and equipment.
- Maintaining compliance with training requirements, including current CITI and IBC training.
- Developing and maintaining laboratory emergency and spill response plans.
- Maintaining and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Supervising and ensuring personnel complete any specific safety training required for the handling of project-related materials throughout the study.
- Protocol Access and Familiarity:
- Ensuring all staff and personnel listed on the project have access to the currently approved protocol.
- Verifying that all personnel have read and understood the protocol before beginning work.
Research Personnel:
Research personnel are responsible for:
- Maintaining current CITI training and completing any additional relevant training as required for the project.
