Through Undergrad & Beyond
Sometimes your education won't just stop with a bachelor's, and a career path requires more than a 4-year degree. Navigating graduate school can be just as confusing as undergrad, if not more so.
To that end, we created this page to help active TRIO scholars and TRIO alumni begin their journey to a graduate, professional, or doctoral program. While the TRIO program can only directly serve students while they're enrolled in their first 4-year degree program, we encourage both active TRIO participants and alumni to reach out to their TRIO advisors if they're considering applying to graduate school.
Graduating seniors and recently graduated alumni (within past 2 years) are also encouraged to contact the Office for Experiential Learning & Career Services. They assist students with graduate/professional school planning, researching and selecting graduate programs to apply to, and crafting applications and essays.
Test & Application Preparation
-
A Quick Note
Not all programs still require graduate admissions tests.
You should research the specific graduate programs you are applying to. Make note of whether or not the programs accepts the test; if the test is recommended or required; and, if possible, what scores you should be aiming for.
Also take note that the GRE has two options: one for a General Test, and one for a Subject Test. You should look at the graduate program's requirements or contact their Admissions Office to see which tests you should register for.

Disability Accommodations
Testing companies are able to provide reasonable testing accommodations for candidates with documented disabilities or health-related needs. Students must apply to these accommodations separately.
Students requiring testing accommodations should look at these pages before they register for their exams. You will need to gather appropriate supporting documentation of your disability, which may include submitting proof of previous testing accommodations you may have received, or having your doctor or another medical professional fill out forms confirming your medical needs.
You must submit accommodations requests by their appropriate deadlines or risk having to postpone your testing date until the accommodation request has been approved.

Fee Waivers Elsewhere
Many graduate programs will offer application fee waivers for applicants who meet certain criteria. This criteria is different for every graduate school, but common qualifiers are:
- Considered federally low-income
- Having received a GRE fee waiver may be an alternative criteria
- TRIO SSS students are eligible to receive GRE fee waivers due to their participation in the program
- Previous participation in programs serving low-income students (e.g., TRIO)
- Completed public service terms (e.g., AmeriCorps, PeaceCorps, Teach for America)
- Being a recipient of certain prestigious scholarships (e.g., Fulbright, Truman, Goldwater)
It is worth researching which schools provide them, and if you qualify based on their guidelines.
Additionally, graduate programs will sometimes give out application fee waivers to students who attend graduate admissions/program fairs. This includes in-person fairs, as well as virtual fairs.
The current average for a single graduate school application is ~$78. If you're applying to multiple schools, this can become quite expensive very quickly!
You can typically find information about fee waivers and how to qualify for them on the graduate program's Admissions page, or on their Funding pages.
If you cannot find it, you should reach out to the program's Admissions Office for further details.
Funding for Master's and Professional Degrees
It is important to understand that funding for graduate school works differently than it does for undergraduate degrees.
Unlike with your bachelor's, you will not qualify for free grant aid from FAFSA (e.g., Pell Grants, FSEOG). That aid is reserved solely for students working toward their first associate's degree or bachelor's degree. Students applying to graduate school can still file a FAFSA, but FAFSA will only provide graduate students with loan options and work-study funds.
For students looking at master's degrees and/or professional degree programs, most of the funding for those programs comes from external fellowships or out-of-pocket. External fellowships for master's degrees are often incredibly competitive, so it's important to research these opportunities ahead of time.

Funding for PhD Programs
In contrast to master's and professional degrees, PhDs often receive internal funding from the graduate program they are accepted into. Some opportunities exist only for PhDs, however. We will create a section detailing some of those opportunities and add it to this page in the near future.
