Recruiting Underrepresented Students
ELCS recognizes that not everyone has equal access to career-related opportunities and networks such as career coaching and professional development. Below are equitable hiring practices that we hope will help remove inequities in your recruitment of students.
Unconscious Bias: Review Your Job Description
When you create your inclusive internship or job description, consider using and familiarizing yourself with Handshake's that will make you a more successful recruiter.
GPA Requirement: Consider removing from your internship or job postings
You may be missing talented candidates when you filter by GPA. High GPAs do not relate to workforce readiness.
Offer a Fair Wage
Employers are strongly encouraged to provide competitive hourly wages or stipends for all internships. Unpaid internships offer opportunities for those who can afford them while leaving those who can't afford them at a disadvantage. ELCS believes that unpaid opportunities in the for-profit sector worsen the already existing employment disparities with regard to race, social class, and gender. In considering offering a paid internship, for-profit companies will show they value their interns, improve their company's diversity and build a more positive employer brand. Nonprofit or start-up organizations whose internships tend to be volunteer-only, should consider value-adds, such as structured mentoring programs, more inclusion in decision making, and provide meaningful and regular feedback regarding the intern's performance.
Be transparent about the salary
State the salary range and whether the offer is negotiable in a job or internship posting. AAUW states that women working full-time in the U.S. are paid 82% of what men earn. Their report, , shows that gap exists at all levels of work.
