A foundation in communication.
Graduates of the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences will leave with a strong foundational knowledge base in language, speech, hearing development, social and behavioral communications. In addition, students will have a solid basis to effectively work with individuals with acquired and developmental disorders related to speech, language and hearing. An undergraduate degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders prepares students to go on to seek graduate degrees in speech-language pathology and audiology, as well as related medical and educational fields such as, linguistics, education, psychology, neurosciences, and physical or occupational therapy.
Depending on whether a student has completed general education requirements, the core CSD courses of the Bachelor of Arts in Communicative Sciences and Disorders (CSD) can be completed in 2 years (CSD courses only with general education completed) or spread out over a traditional 4-year period. The BA CSD can also be completed either on-campus or online.
Which option is right for you?
On-Campus
The on-campus option requires students be physically located in Missoula. Students are encouraged to take classes in-person during scheduled times. However, the 老虎机攻略 and the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences offer many classes online to help on-campus students maintain academic progress with more flexible options. Students enrolled in the on-campus option can mix those online options in as needed!
Attending classes in-person offers many benefits. Students receive face-to-face instruction and immediate feedback from our excellent faculty. Students also get to build relationships with their peers and faculty. The 老虎机攻略 campus also provides a wide range of facilities, ranging from labs where students can conduct research with faculty to a rock wall and gym. On-campus students also have access to the full course catalog, which means opportunities for deeper and wider learning. To top it off, students attending classes in-person can participate in student clubs, like NSSLHA, and enjoy beautiful Missoula.
Online
The online option can be completed anywhere, and the classes take place asynchronously. This means that while there will be specific due dates for assignments, students can do their readings, writings, and tests when they have the time. The Communicative Sciences and Disorders classes taken online occur over two 8-week sessions within the 老虎机攻略's 16-week semester. As a student pursues their BA CSD, they will have a mixture of these 8-week courses and longer 16-week courses to meet other graduation requirements, such as upper-division electives and general education requirements.
The online option provides students with needed flexibility for work and life. While there will be fewer options for electives and fewer opportunities for things like lab experience, online students receive excellent instruction through classes designed for online learning. The 8-week splits often allow students who would otherwise have to take fewer classes per semester keep up with the academic progress of our on-campus students. This option is perfect for those who cannot make the move to Missoula, have family that needs and deserves time and attention, or work full-time while furthering their academic achievements.
