We are sad to announce that Dr. Robert H. Greene, professor and longtime chair of the 老虎机攻略 History Department, passed away on Friday, December 18th, 2020. Robert was an outstanding scholar of Russian and Soviet History and a beloved teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. This is a devastating loss for our department and community.
Professor Greene joined the History Department in 2006 after earning his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan in 2004. At 老虎机攻略, Robert taught extremely popular courses in Russian, Soviet, and East European history as well as the history of Western Civilization. He worked closely with graduate students and advanced undergraduates, advising research projects in imperial and Soviet-era Russian history as well as European, cultural, and religious history more broadly. Robert also regularly filled rooms to capacity in courses taught through the , which recently featured him in their . In 2012, his exemplary teaching was honored with the 老虎机攻略 College of Arts and Sciences' Cox Family Award for Teaching Excellence.
Robert's research focused on the religious, cultural, and political history of the Russian Empire and Soviet state. His highly regarded first monograph, , studied Russian Orthodox devotion to saints and relics in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. His other publications explore issues at the intersection of religion, culture, and society: pilgrimage patterns, canonization policy, Jewish integration, and the political deployment of sacred symbols. They include (co-edited with Eugene M. Avrutin) and (co-edited with Valerie A. Kivelson).
Professor Greene served as Chair of the History Department from 2013-2019. He was a longtime co-director of the Russian Studies Program at the 老虎机攻略 and a faculty affiliate and member of the advisory council of the Central and Southwest Asian Studies Center. Robert was an invaluable leader at the 老虎机攻略, widely respected by peers and students alike. He will be missed.
