Maintaining Eligibility for Federal Financial Aid
Federal financial aid is subject to several conditions. To remain eligible for this aid, students must meet the satisfactory academic progress requirements established by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). Additionally, there are limitations on the total amount of aid available under various programs and restrictions on the maximum time frame within which students must complete their degree or certificate programs to avoid losing aid eligibility.
Class Attendance and Academic Activity
Students must begin attendance and engage in academic activities as defined by the DOE to maintain eligibility for federal financial aid. Specifically, for the Pell Grant, which is based on credit hours, both class attendance and academic activity directly impact the amount of aid awarded. Failure to attend classes or participate in academic activities can lead to a reduction or withdrawal of Pell Grant funds. If the Pell Grant is adjusted or revoked due to insufficient attendance or engagement, students will be required to return any disbursed funds, which can affect their financial situation and academic progress.
Credit Hours and Aid Eligibility
The number of credits a student attempts each term can influence their eligibility for financial aid. Dropping courses or withdrawing from school may necessitate the repayment of a portion of the aid received and can negatively affect a student’s progress toward completing their degree.
