Grades 5-12 and K-12:
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students seeking licensure to teach at the middle and high school level complete a content specific education major. In addition, the College of Education provides foundational course work to prepare teachers for the challenges of the classroom, as well as state secondary licensure requirements.
All students in secondary education programs must apply for admission into the teacher education program (TEP) before taking licensure (EDU) courses. Applications are submitted online for acceptance into the program the following semester. Once admitted to the TEP, students will have an academic advisor within the Department of Teaching and Learning. In addition to content area advisors, academic advisors in education can develop meaningful education plans, provide guidance in education trends, assist students in licensure requirements, and answer questions and provide insight into the teaching and classroom experience.
Teaching majors, minors, and endorsements:
When selecting a teaching career path, students should keep in mind the value of earning licensure in multiple fields, especially those in high demand, to increase their employment opportunities. Please note that some majors require a second major and/or minor. All areas lead to licensure for grades 5-12 unless noted otherwise.

Clinical Hours
An important component to the Secondary Education program is an extensive clinical experience. Prior to student teaching, students in the college of education complete 75 hours of clinical experience. During this time, students will gain valuable experience in middle and high school classrooms in a supervised setting while concurrently completing methods course work. The final clinical field experience is student teaching, an intensive immersion where students spend 16 weeks in a supervised classroom.
EDU 395 with Management: 30 hours in a content-specific K-12 classroom taken concurrently with EDU 444 Classroom Management for Secondary Classrooms
EDU 395 with Methods: 45 hours in a content-specific K-12 classroom taken concurrently with the appropriate methods course.
