Personal Summary

I am a professor of linguistics at the �ϻ�������. I was born and raised in Yamagata, Japan. After graduating from high school in Yamagata and completing a year of academic English training in Tokyo, I moved to the United States to receive higher education. I received my B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of Arizona; my dissertation was on phonology in Tohono O’odham, an Indigenous language spoken in southwestern Arizona, US, and northern Sonora, Mexico. I joined the �ϻ������� as a linguistics professor in 2003. My specializations are documentary linguistics and phonetics and phonology. The current focus of my research is documentary linguistics in Blackfoot, which began with a collaboration with the late Mr. Darrell Kipp at the Piegan Institute in Browning, Montana. I have recorded lullabies and other songs, narratives, conversations, and isolated words in Blackfoot. I am currently engaged in research and outreach funded by the National Science Foundation’s Dynamic Language Infrastructure Program (NSF-DLI). My research focuses on documentation and application of rhythm and melody in Blackfoot. I am also engaged in Community-Based Research; I established the Collaborative Language Planning Project (CLPP). In the summer of 2022, I co-directed the Institute on Collaborative Language Research 2022 which was held on the �ϻ������� campus.

Research Interests

Blackfoot Linguistics

I have been studying the Blackfoot language spoken in Alberta, Canada and Montana, US. My interest is to investigate prosody of the language as well as to promote the use of the language assisting the and the Language Culture Division at the .

Phonology in a Yamagata Dialect of Japanese

I am interested in phonetics, phonology, and morphology in a Yamagata dialect of Japanese particularly spoken in Kahoku-cho (Yachi), Yamagata-ken.
Currently, I am researching on Rendaku in this dialect as a member of the group directed by at .
I also collaborate with at the Yamagata University in developing the Rendaku Database.
