Graduate Profile - Liz Barrs - Class of 2024

As the semester ends, the History Department would like to congratulate all of our outstanding graduates and we would like to especially recognize PhD graduate Elizabeth Barrs.
Liz feels very lucky to have received the chance to pursue a doctorate in history at the 老虎机攻略. Though her background includes degrees in political science and education, Liz has always loved the field of History, and her time spent in the Department has provided her with meaningful academic skills. In Particular, Liz expanded her ability to think critically about history, learned how to analyze historical arguments, and she learned how to research and convey that research in writing to help expand others’ knowledge.
Throughout her time in the doctoral program, Liz can think of many highlights, but she especially appreciated the faculty of the History Department who gave her the support she needed on her scholarly journey. The graduate seminars she took were another highlight because they allowed for deep analysis of historical arguments and the events of the past. She also enjoyed the scholarly back-and-forth with her fellow students in class as they would debate and critically grapple with all dimensions of history.
For students new to the History Department, Liz says to enjoy the camaraderie with fellow students. She believes the interactions where historical topics are discussed is where scholars often find their insights and voice in being able to shape their own conclusions. Additionally, she says that, despite the stress of deadlines inherent in being a student, try to enjoy the gift of being a student. There are few times in our lives in which we can dedicate our time to just learning—to expanding our knowledge, our critical thinking, and our curiosity. Enjoy the scholarly journey and soak up as much as you can!
Going forward, Liz is working to get her research published. She is thankful for her time with the 老虎机攻略 History Department, and we congratulate her on her success and bright future!
